Hospice of Harnett County
Hospice of Harnett County is pleased to announce its merger with Hospice of Wake County.
Our new relationship is designed to enhance access to non-profit care in your community.
History
Hospice of Harnett County began in 1984 as an Outreach Committee of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church of Erwin. The Vestry of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church voted to contribute $250 as seed money to research the community for support of a hospice program in Harnett County.
On February 25, 1985 a meeting was called at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital. About 30 citizens including doctors, clergy and hospital administrators attended to show their interest in establishing a Hospice. An interim board of directors was established and interested volunteers signed up as a support group.
The interim board for the Hospice organization held its first meeting on March 11, 1985 in the dining room of Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital. At the meeting it was passed that the name of the organization should be HOSPICE OF HARNETT COUNTY, INC. It was also decided that the service area would be Harnett County.
In May 1985, the 40-member organization, whose purpose was to provide support and care for terminally ill persons and their families, received a $25,000 grant from the North Carolina State Legislature. The projected budget for the first year of operations was $45,000.
There was great excitement as the Hospice of Harnett County, Inc. passed Licensure requirements with flying colors. The Hospice of Harnett County, Inc. opened its doors and began accepting patients on November 17, 1986. Hospice of Harnett County, Inc. became Medicare- and Medicaid-certified on November 12, 1987.
In January 2011, Hospice of Harnett County became a division of Hospice of Wake County, with the intent of offering additional services such as Palliative Care and Home Care in the future. Hospice of Harnett County is still based in Dunn, North Carolina and still provides compassionate and thorough hospice and bereavement services to patients at end of life and their families.
