HOW DOES SOMEONE GET HOSPICE CARE? WHO MAKES THE REFERRAL?
Hospice services are available throughout North Carolina. We serve residents of Wake County and parts of surrounding counties. If you live outside our service area, we will assist you in finding other providers. HOWC is the oldest and largest hospice provider in Wake County. Started in 1979, HOWC can provide care to individuals living in private residences, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals or in assisted living communities. Simply contact HOWC at 828-0890. Anyone may request information about our services. You are never under any obligation to receive hospice care. Our hospice team is available to help you or your physician determine if hospice care is the right fit for you.
WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE A LOCAL PHYSICIAN?
If you do not have a local physician, HOWC can provide you with a list of area practices. HOWC also has a full time medical director who may be able to assist in your care.
HOW IS HOSPICE PAID FOR?
Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, most major insurance companies and managed care providers. Thanks to the generous support of our community hospice is available to all who need it, regardless of ability to pay.

CAN PEOPLE LIVING IN NURSING HOMES AND ASSISTED LIVINGS RECEIVE HOSPICE CARE?
HOWC works closely with area nursing and assisted living communities. The hospice care teams work closely with the staff of these communities as well as the family members to insure the best care for the individual.
ARE THE HOSPICE CARE TEAMS VOLUNTEERS?
Although HOWC relies heavily on our over 250 volunteers, our professional care teams are employees. Volunteers may provide additional support to families through practical support, emotional support and respite services.
WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DO YOUR VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE?
Volunteers and employees are screened very carefully by the HOWC managers. References are required and both criminal and driving records are reviewed.
Volunteers must complete a 12-hour minimum, comprehensive training program. The training program includes opportunities for sharing and interaction, combined with lecture, and self-study materials. For more information on Volunteer Opportunities please return to our Home Page.
